Here you can see all of the signing mechanisms that have been activated for your profile. As the signing mechanism may impact your costs, these can only be configured by us.
E-Machtiging (Only NL) (also Called DIM or Digitaal Incassomachtigen)
- e-Machtiging is an electronic authorization system for direct debits in the Netherlands. It simplifies mandate creation by verifying through the user’s bank login.
- Countries: Netherlands.
- Reliability: High. e-Machtiging is reliable for recurring payments and is widely accepted in the Netherlands due to its integration with local banks. It guarantees the IBAN, identifies the signer, checks if the account can be used for direct debits, registers the mandate at bank side and delivers for B2B mandates also the maximum amount identified by the end-user.
- For more info, see Digitaal Incassomachtigen
iDIN (Only NL)
- iDIN is an identification and signing method offered by Dutch banks, similar to eID and itsme in Belgium. It authenticates users for secure online signing.
- Countries: Netherlands.
- Reliability: High. iDIN is as secure as eID, and since it's managed through banks, it provides a high level of trust and reliability.
itsme
- Itsme is a digital identity app used for secure login and signing, leveraging mobile phones for identity verification.
- Countries: Belgium and Luxembourg.
- Reliability: High. Itsme offers secure mobile-based authentication, making it a convenient and reliable signing option, especially for users familiar with digital identity verification.
eID (only BE)
- eID allows users to sign using their national electronic identity card, which provides a high-security level by verifying both identity and intent to sign.
- Countries: Belgium.
- Reliability: Very high. Since it requires a PIN and a physical card reader, this method is highly reliable and widely trusted for legal agreements.
- Bancontact allows signing with an initial payment in Belgium, linking the mandate to the payment confirmation.
- Countries: Belgium.
- Reliability: High. Bancontact is the preferred payment method in Belgium. It provides the IBAN and ensures end-user identification during the signature process. It's also perfect to have a real first payment in a subscription.
iDEAL | Wero (first payment)
- iDEAL | Wero enables signing through a bank transfer for the initial payment. Common in the Netherlands, it links the mandate with a verified payment.
- Countries: Netherlands.
- Reliability: High. Since iDEAL | Wero is widely used and highly secure. It provides the IBAN and ensures end-user identification during the signature process. It's also perfect to have a real first payment in a subscription.
PayPal (first Payment)
- Using PayPal as a signing method involves making an initial payment through PayPal to confirm both the mandate agreement and payment authorization. This approach leverages PayPal’s trusted online payment system, adding an extra layer of security through account verification.
- Countries: Available across many countries globally, including Belgium, Netherlands, and SEPA regions.
- Reliability: Moderate to High. PayPal is widely trusted for online transactions, making it a reliable option for mandates. However, it might not hold the same legal weight as local methods like eID or bank-linked signing mechanisms. It’s useful for customers familiar with PayPal and international clients who prefer PayPal’s convenience.
- Best For: Recurring payments where users can rely on PayPal’s secure, widely recognized system without needing a separate verification process. Ideal for international use.
Bankcard signing (Debit Visa, Debit Mastercard, Visa, Mastercard)
- Users can sign a mandate using their Debit Visa, Debit Mastercard, Visa and Mastercard card, which is widely used for debit payments or credit payments. Maestro as "brandname" will be replaced by Debit Mastercard.
- Countries: Belgium, Netherlands, and other SEPA countries.
- Reliability: Moderate to High. Debit Mastercard and Visa, Visa and Mastercard are suitable for signing mandates, but it may not offer the same level of identification such as itsme, eID or iDIN. It guarantees that the end-user possesses their bank card and has access to their bank account. The mandate is approved by the end-user using Face ID, a PIN, a Digipass, a fingerprint, or another bank validation method. While it does not share the account holder's name, it meets the strict requirements for generating signatures and ensuring strong customer authentication.
Sms
- SMS verification allows users to confirm their identity and sign a mandate by entering a code sent via SMS. It adds an extra layer of security by requiring phone access. In a second use case, SMS is used in a dialogue with the end-customer in a challenge response session.
- Countries: Belgium, Netherlands, and other SEPA countries.
- Reliability: Moderate. While convenient and commonly used, it’s less secure than eID, itsme or a bankcard. It’s suitable for straightforward agreements but may lack the robustness needed for high-value contracts.
Wet signature
- A wet signature involves manually signing a printed document. After signing, the document must be scanned or uploaded back to the system to finalize the mandate. This is the traditional signing method, widely recognized for its legal enforceability.
- Countries: Available and legally recognized across Belgium, Netherlands, SEPA, and most countries globally.
- Reliability: Medium. While legally valid and widely accepted, wet signatures may not offer the same level of efficiency or security as digital signing methods like eID or itsme.
- Best For: Legal contracts that require physical proof of intent, especially in situations where other electronic signing methods are unavailable or not legally enforceable. It’s especially suitable for high-value agreements that need a concrete, physical signature.
Account Check (AIS)
- As part of the fraud module, the AIS signature can be used. The person signs the agreement via their own bank, providing one-time access to live bank data. Based on your pre-defined rules (e.g. the signer must be a private individual, have a balance over €100, or at least 50 transactions), the agreement will either be approved for signature or automatically declined.
Note: You will not see any bank details — only whether the signature was successful or the reason it was rejected, based on your configured rules.
- Countries: Available in SEPA countries, for banks that support SEPA and have at least 1 connected bank available
- Reliability: High – data comes directly from the customer's bank via AIS
- Best For: Companies needing automated, real-time fraud prevention and a secure digital signing process

Best Practices for Creating a Mandate
In both the Netherlands and Belgium, there are guidelines for creating a valid mandate (SEPA) to ensure transparency and avoid confusion. These best practices are also endorsed by the Maatschappelijk Overleg Betalingsverkeer (MOB) in the Netherlands.
Transparency
The mandate must clearly indicate that it is a mandate and state its purpose. This information should be visible without scrolling, legible on all devices, and retrievable by the end client. Clear visibility reduces confusion and ensures higher success rates for mandate execution.
Completeness
A mandate must include specific elements such as:
- For the Netherlands: "SEPA Incasso Machtiging" (or "SEPA Bedrijven Incasso Machtiging" for businesses).
- For Belgium: "SEPA Europese Automatische Incasso" (or "SEPA B2B Europese Automatische Incasso" for businesses).
It must also include information about both the debtor and the creditor, such as their names, addresses, IBAN, and relevant identification codes (e.g., Incassant-ID or Schuldeiseridentificatie).
Acceptable Signing Method
The signing method must be secure and legally acceptable. For electronic mandates, options like iDin, eID or itsme are preferred. For paper mandates, a wet signature is valid.
Easy Withdrawal
Mandates must be easily retractable. This can be done via the same method used to create the mandate (e.g., via the Twikey platform in Belgium), or through other methods such as a bank’s e-banking portal.
By following these best practices, you can ensure that your mandates comply with SEPA rules and minimize the risk of rejections or penalties.
